Renting in Malta: what to expect in 2026

Malta is a small island with a fast rental market, and the listing you liked this morning may be gone by the afternoon. Knowing the rhythm of the market saves you both money and disappointment.

When to look

Peak season runs from June to September, when demand from seasonal workers and students pushes prices up. October to March is the quieter half of the year, and the same apartment can be a few hundred euro cheaper.

What you will need

  • A copy of your passport or ID card
  • Proof of income or an employment letter
  • One month deposit, usually plus one month in advance

Typical costs

Expect a one-bedroom in Sliema or St Julian's to sit between 800 and 1,200 euro a month outside peak season. Further from the coast the same budget goes noticeably further.

Always confirm whether water and electricity are included. On Malta they frequently are not, and the shortfall surprises people.
