The capital, and unlike anywhere else on the island to live. Valletta is a small walled city of stone streets, high ceilings and steep steps, where far fewer people live than pass through each day. Living here is a specific choice, and the people who love it tend to love it a great deal.
The lifestyle
Valletta empties in the evening: it is busy with workers and visitors during the day and remarkably quiet once they leave, which residents tend to describe as the best part. The trade-offs are real — steps and steep streets in several districts, very limited parking, and buildings that are beautiful and old, with the maintenance and insulation that implies. Some streets are lively into the night; others are silent. It is a city where the specific street matters more than the district.
Property in Valletta
Almost entirely conversions and historic buildings: apartments carved out of townhouses, whole townhouses, and occasional larger properties. Condition and standard vary enormously — a beautifully restored flat and a barely-modernised one can sit on the same street. Lifts are the exception, so which floor a property is on matters. Supply is limited and turnover slow. A good deal of the stock has been drawn into short-let use, which reduces what is available for long lets.
