A quiet residential village on its own creek east of Birgu, looking across at Valletta and the harbour. Kalkara is calmer and more ordinary than the Three Cities and has become a steady choice for people who want the harbour without the crowds.

The lifestyle

Kalkara is a village rather than a historic town, and is much quieter than Birgu or Cospicua. There is a waterfront, a few restaurants and not a great deal else — shopping and evenings mean going to the Three Cities or Paola. Some newer development sits alongside the older core. It suits people who want harbour views and quiet and are content to drive for most things, and it is a noticeably easier place to park than its neighbours.

Property in Kalkara

A mix of apartments, maisonettes and houses, with more modern stock than the Three Cities and correspondingly fewer maintenance surprises. Waterfront and view properties command a premium. Outdoor space is more common than in the fortified towns. Both furnished and unfurnished long lets are available.
