The most visited of the Three Cities, also called Vittoriosa — a fortified peninsula of narrow stone streets running down to a marina full of large yachts. Birgu has changed a great deal in recent years and is now one of the more sought-after historic addresses on the island.
The lifestyle
Birgu is small, old and increasingly desirable, which has pushed prices up and pulled a good deal of stock into short-letting. The streets are narrow and largely unsuited to cars; parking is a real constraint and worth settling before signing. The marina end is lively in the evening while the streets behind stay quiet. It suits people who want to live in a historic town and accept what old buildings involve, and it does not suit anyone who needs to park at the door.
Property in Birgu
Predominantly houses of character and converted townhouses, with a smaller number of apartments. Courtyards and roof terraces are common; lifts are not. Restoration standards vary enormously and rents track condition more than address. Supply for long lets is thinner than it looks, because a share of the best stock is let short-term to visitors.
