The narrow fortified peninsula between the two creeks, also called Isla, with a single main street running its length and views back at Valletta from the point. Senglea is dense, old and less polished than Birgu next door.
The lifestyle
Senglea is narrow, densely built and thoroughly local — less gentrified than Birgu and cheaper for it. The main street runs the length of the peninsula and everything hangs off it. It was heavily bombed in the war and rebuilt, so the housing is a mix of genuinely old and mid-century. Parking is difficult. It suits people who want a historic harbour town without Birgu’s prices and are content with a community that is Maltese rather than international.
Property in Senglea
Townhouses and apartments, with houses of character in the older streets. Prices are lower than Birgu for comparable space and character. Condition is mixed and there is more unmodernised stock. Waterfront and view properties are the exception and go quickly. Unfurnished long lets are common.
