One of Malta’s larger villages, sitting in farmland in the south-west with the cliffs behind it. Siggiewi has a proper village centre and a real community, and it is far enough from the harbour towns to feel like a different island.

The lifestyle

Siggiewi runs on village time. It is quiet most of the year and then extremely lively around the feast, which is worth knowing rather than discovering. Maltese is the language of daily life here more than in the expat-heavy towns, and while English is universally understood, an incomer is more visible than in Sliema. A car is necessary — buses run to Valletta and Rabat but the journey is long. Amenities are good for a village: shops, bakeries, a health centre, schools. Getting to the harbour area at peak times is a real commute and should be tested before committing.

Property in Siggiewi

A wide spread. The village core holds townhouses and houses of character, some with wells, courtyards and roof terraces, in every state from restored to untouched. Around the edges are maisonettes and newer apartment blocks at prices well below the coast. Farmhouses appear in the surrounding countryside. Outdoor space of some kind is normal here rather than a premium. Unfurnished lettings are common, particularly for the larger houses.
